KARP Associates is completing another renovation at the Stamford JCC. The administrative offices are being transformed into a space that can better serve the members. Now that the new locker rooms are complete, we are converting existing office, library, and meeting space into multi-functional classrooms and also updating the front entrance and lobby area to address current security challenges. The project is estimated to be completed by summer of 2021. At the core of this renovation, is the desire to help the JCC deliver their mission of building community. The updated classroom wing will allow for the children who attend the Sara Walker Nursery School to move to the Newfield Avenue JCC Campus and infants to join the brand-new, state-of-the-art facility. Additionally, these classrooms will serve KidsPlace, Inclusion, Day Camps and membership communities. Members will enjoy the dramatic transformation which yields a contemporary, attractive and safe environment. The new safety enhancements include the installation of entrance turnstiles, secure and electronic wing access and added surveillance capabilities. The KARP team continues to make long strides during the pandemic and is looking forward to providing the Stamford JCC with an exciting conversion of their community center.

The Stamford JCC was in need for a major renovation due to its outdated locker rooms. 100% of the interior of the men’s and women’s locker rooms were demolished and re-built. During demolition we discovered severe deterioration in the structure and old plumbing pipes completely rusted through. After tackling the mechanical and structural deficiencies, we were able to focus on the overall aesthetics of the new space. Some exciting features of the locker rooms are the State-Of-The-Art sauna and steam rooms that create a true spa-like feeling. Multi-textured wall tiles which spans the entire length of the locker room accentuates the spa-like atmosphere. All areas of the JCC are now ADA compliant with handicap accessible showers and bathroom stalls with room for an aid to accompany the member. For those who chose to swim, a swimsuit spin dyer is conveniently built-in to all locker rooms. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, KARP was not slowed down and completed the project in 8 months. New ERV units were installed to double the capacity of air circulation for the renovated space. Warmly lit locker rooms bring out the canvas of monochrome greys and whites which offer a relaxing and inviting atmosphere post workout.

In 1984, a young architect said to me (back when I, too, was a young architect): “We build “Contemp-alonials” — Colonial on the outside, Contemporary on the inside.” That sentence conveys the reality that, for homes, “style” is a means to an end. That means marketing in real estate. It is challenging to sell a very expensive thing. The more costly any item is, the more marketing is needed to find a buyer. The most expensive thing almost all of us need is our home. Whether we rent or purchase, the place we live consumes a huge part of what we earn and what we are worth.

This Old House host Kevin O’Connor attended a “hard hat tour” along with hundreds of other people on Tuesday, May 14, since this project has been chosen as the fifth annual Idea House. Invited guests walked through the construction site, which included an antique Greek revival style 1780 facade on half of the front, some exterior walls and interior frame for the mostly new building. Plans are to save the historic façade and build a new house from the ground up that will remain true to the architectural style of the existing structure. The new 6,000-square-foot home exhibiting the latest technology and innovation in residential construction will be completed by August 2019. Karp Associates waited 8 long years to purchase the house out of foreclosure in order to ensure the house was kept as a significant part of the New Canaan, CT historic district. After careful investigation, members of the Historic District Commission worked with the Karp team to determine which section of the house was original and should be saved. There was a great meeting of the minds and the commission applauded Karp for setting a promising precedent for future development in the historic district.
